Music Space

A space and time for your child and you to be together in music

Music Space is an innovative, therapeutic programme developed specifically for children aged 0-5 years who are considered at risk of developing or have a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of a neurological condition, and their parents/ carers.

We use the context of interactive music-making to support you to nurture your child’s development from the very first stages in their life, fostering positive parent-child interactions and infant development including bonding, attunement, communication, posture and movement skills, confidence and emotional wellbeing. We want you to discover new ways of making music with your child and practical ideas to support their learning and development at home.

Weekly 1-to-1 sessions (normally in 4–6-week blocks on a Friday with each session lasting 30-45 minutes) are provided at our Centre in Cumbernauld where you will be guided by a highly specialist occupational therapist working in partnership with a Nordoff & Robbins music therapist.

During initial sessions we will get to know your child and you and agree some shared areas of focus. We will work with you to identify the most appropriate positions and instruments to support and challenge your child, supporting you both to connect, play and have fun together. Activities will highlight your child’s strengths and support them to learn new skills. We will talk to you about activity ideas to take away, provide information on the resources, and offer guidance on next steps.

Music Space is a collaboration between The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments and Nordoff & Robbins Music Therapy.

What our parents have to say....

"The sessions encouraged more movement and willingness to use my daughter’s weaker side. I saw how she uses eye-pointing as a way of communication".
