Craighalbert Nursery

Our Curriculum

At Craighalbert, our curriculum is shaped by the active participation of our learners. We take time to truly understand each child, and this understanding guides how we structure every school day. Effective planning starts with knowing our learners, and this principle is at the heart of our approach.

We place your child at the heart of everything we do. Each learning programme is bespoke, carefully tailored to reflect your child's unique abilities, interests, and communication styles. Our team conducts assessments to understand your child's starting points and creates personalised targets that offer appropriate challenge and achievement.

Our curriculum delivers learning through sensory rich activities. This multi-sensory approach helps children process information in ways that are most accessible to them and supports them to investigate and focus on those that prove more challenging.

Key development areas

  • Communication: Our curriculum is underpinned by communication. All our children have access to robust AAC systems tailored to their individual needs.

  • Physical Development: Specialised positioning, therapy informed, accessible activities that promote physical wellbeing and body awareness.

  • Cognition: Cause and effect activities, object permanence games, and choice-making opportunities designed to develop understanding of the environment around our children.

  • Personal Development: Supporting emotional wellbeing, developing relationships, and celebrating achievements to build confidence and self-awareness.

Therapeutic approaches

Therapeutic approaches are woven throughout the day rather than delivered as isolated sessions to maximise opportunities for positive learning.

We document your child's progress through detailed observations and ongoing discussions between familiar staff, capturing even the smallest steps forward. This gives us a clearly defined foundation and insight into each child's learning style, enabling us to build a personalised approach to their education. As staff, we want our children to achieve, and our aspirations for their development encompass a holistic and rights based approach to education and well-being.

Regular review meetings and daily communication ensure you're fully involved in celebrating achievements and planning next steps. Our curriculum recognises that meaningful learning for our children often happens in the smallest moments of engagement and response, and we value these precious milestones as significant achievements.
