Water Space

A space and time for your child and you to benefit from hydrotherapy

Water Space is an innovative, therapeutic programme developed specifically for children aged 0-5 years who are considered at risk of developing or have a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of a neurological condition, and their parents/ carers.

We use the properties of our hydrotherapy pool to support you to nurture your child’s development from the very first stages in their life, fostering positive parent-child interactions and infant-parent bonding, while offering an opportunity for your child to work towards communication, posture and movement skills, physical wellbeing, confidence, emotional wellbeing, and early swimming awards.

We want you to discover new ways of connecting, playing and having fun with your child and practical ideas to support their learning and development at home.

Small group sessions are provided at our Centre in Cumbernauld where you will be guided by a highly specialist physiotherapist, experienced learning, therapy and care practitioner and Turtle Tots swimming instructor to deliver parent-mediated aquatic therapy in combination with pre-and early swimming skills.

Sessions for 4-6 children take place on a Saturday morning/afternoon, normally in short blocks of 3 sessions approximately 2-3 weeks apart with each water-based session lasting approximately 30 minutes.   Families are invited to arrive/delay leaving 30-60 minutes before or after sessions to take advantage of informal parent-parent support and opportunities to participate in the co-production of a rolling calendar of information sessions and future components of our early intervention programmes.

Your questions answered

Do I need to attend with my child?

Yes, you or another adult who cares for your child on a regular basis is required to support your child’s participation throughout the water-based sessions with guidance from our staff team.

Can more than one family member come to session?

Yes. We can normally accommodate only one parent/ carer per child in the pool, however you may find it helpful to have another adult with you to e.g. help with changing before/ after a session and there is an observation room adjacent to the pool from where they can watch.

Do I need to be a confident swimmer?

No! Our hydrotherapy pool does not exceed in 1.3 metres depth therefore you will be able to remain on your feet throughout.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please check our Welcome Booklet for details on what to bring, including our double nappy policy for all babies and toddlers using the hydrotherapy pool.

Do I need to pay to attend?

No, sessions are offered free-of-charge to parents.

How do I find out more?

What our parents have to say....

"The sessions encouraged more movement and willingness to use my daughter’s weaker side. I saw how she uses eye-pointing as a way of communication".
