Supporting health, wellbeing and participation through specialist nursing care
At Craighalbert we have dedicated nursing staff on site each day to monitor children’s health, provide timely interventions and promote their overall wellbeing. Our nurses have extensive experience supporting children with neurological conditions and complex healthcare needs, enabling them to deliver highly specialised, responsive care tailored to every child who attends our centre.
The nursing team oversees all aspects of each child’s healthcare needs while they are with us. They also provide comprehensive training and guidance to staff, ensuring that everyone involved in a child’s day understands their individual needs and can support them safely and confidently. Having this expertise available on site allows us to respond as children’s health needs change, adapting their care promptly and appropriately.
This specialist provision helps children to continue attending school, participating in activities and engaging in learning, even when they face significant or evolving healthcare challenges. Because healthcare support is integrated into the school day, we can plan around required treatments and interventions rather than allowing them to become a barrier to education. Each child’s timetable and daily routine can be adapted to accommodate their medical care while maintaining as much continuity, independence and inclusion as possible.
Our on-site expertise also reduces reliance on external professionals for routine support and enables us to provide care at the point it is needed. Nurses are available to assess concerns, respond to changes in a child’s condition and deliver appropriate interventions throughout the day. They are also equipped to manage emergency situations, including providing respiratory support and responding to and managing seizures.
We work closely with every child and their family to develop a detailed understanding of their health, preferences, routines and individual goals. By building trusting therapeutic relationships, our nurses can provide holistic, person-centred care that considers not only a child’s clinical needs, but also their comfort, communication, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.
Our nursing team also collaborates with each child’s wider healthcare network, including relevant medical and therapy professionals. This collaborative approach supports clear communication, continuity of care and coordinated decision-making. By working towards shared goals, we can ensure that healthcare, education and wellbeing are considered together, giving every child the best possible opportunity to feel safe, take part and achieve their potential.
